Taking Off With Audio Astronauts

In the Japanese workplace, there’s a philosophy called kaizen.  The word literally means “good change,” but it is essentially the belief that there should be continuous improvement that reduces waste and improves efficiency.  Originally, it was a philosophy that applied to manufacturing and engineering, but over time, other businesses, areas of study, and doctrines have adopted it.  The more you read about kaizen, the more you understand that it is more about tasking workers with the responsibility of examining their own practices in an objective way and finding ways to better their own environments.  As music lovers, why shouldn’t we apply kaizen to the way we select and listen to our music?

While I’ve always been a music analyst, I will freely admit to relating more to lyrics and vocals and not really understanding all the intricacies that go into making the tunes that pump out of my headphones.  That’s why when a musician that I’ve come to really respect announced that he was launching a podcast about audio engineering, producing, and recording, I found myself intrigued.

Two dudes exploring the depths of modern recording – and dedicated to musical kaizen.

Two dudes exploring the depths of modern recording – and dedicated to musical kaizen.

Meet the Audio Astronauts:  Deke Spears and Matt Rowles.  Both fellas are accomplished musicians and studio gurus.  Each Wednesday, these guys spend about an hour (depending on how chatty Deke is feeling) talking about recording equipment, processes, and techniques.  They discuss albums, producers and engineers, playing examples and digging into what makes certain recordings great.

It’s really fascinating to hear them talk about records that I’ve literally been listening to for more than half my life and hear them from a totally different perspective because they steer me into listening to them with a different ear.  Whether it’s hearing a new instrument that I’ve never noticed before, or understanding how individual producers influence styles and sound, I come away each week with a literal earful of new information.  And while I might only really key in or understand two or three things that they talk about, each time I listen to a new piece of music, I’m hearing it through new filters.  And, bonus, I’ve started listening to artists I might otherwise have skipped because it’s not “my type of music.”  Talk about expanding my musical horizons.

The thing I love most (well, other than their rather endearing sound geek senses of humor) is that Deke and Matt are completely dedicated to getting people to not only appreciate, but to demand more, from the music they listen to.  They expect it not only of themselves and others in their craft, but they are giving anyone who listens to music the power to improve their auditory environment.  Musical kaizen.

I’ve embedded my favorite episode below for easy listening (and no, it’s not my favorite just because they give me a shout-out), but you can get to the podcast in any number of ways – by subscribing on iTunes, listening on SoundCloud, or on their webpage.  They also love interacting with people in the community, so if you listen, be sure to touch base with them and let them know what you think.

A Song About Working…For Your Labor Day Weekend

It’s a little over a month until the Quiet Hounds show at the Atlanta History Center on October 4th.  Given my last life-altering experience seeing this cultivated quintet (and friends), to say I am excited is an understatement.  Since Allison turned me onto them a little over two years ago, they have entrenched themselves in my musical little heart.  They have changed the way I listen to music and watch live performances in more ways than one.

So, in honor of my growing anticipation of the Swans & Embers event and the Labor Day weekend, I thought I’d repost the live takeaway of “I Get Up,” a thoughtful homage to the reasons we tear off the covers every day and go to work.

Enjoy your three days off, friends.

(Don’t forget, you can download all of Quiet Hounds material for free at quiethounds.com; however, if you want to support these incredible artists, please consider purchasing the albums on iTunes or merch from their website.  Or, better yet, come to the Atlanta event in October and see what makes this band so special.)

Earworm of the Week: Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, “Firecracker”

I was torn this week. I have a couple of songs that have been on non-stop repeat, but I’m going with the one that makes me most happy it is almost the weekend.

Canadian Michael Bernard Fitzgerald – referred to often as just MBF – first caught my attention on The Sixty-One a few years back (Sidebar: oh, I miss The Sixty-One! I’m sure Jess and Brad will lament its demise with me.). His unique voice grabs you straight away, but it’s his humorous and effortless mix of singer-songwriter and hip-hoppy style that will keep you smiling.

His new album, YES, dropped this week and the crazy addictive, drum beat heavy “Firecracker” opens it up with a bang. It was actually released on a pre-album EP a few months back first, but in those few short months, MBF’s name has been popping up everywhere…even on my beloved Rock Boat, where he’ll be one of the performing acts this year. The new album is a guaranteed happy…check it out.

P.S. What I may love most about this fella is his social media consistency. Everywhere from Twitter to Facebook to his website, he’s ilovembf. If that isn’t worthy of a follow, I don’t know what is.

Introducing Southbound Honey (Kind Of)

When it comes to music from my favorite artists, I have a real hard time keeping a secret.  Luckily, I got permission to spill the beans on this one.

Southbound Honey

Tara Keith and Christopher Jak are Southbound Honey

Christopher Jak, aka the man who has penned my favorite line of any song ever in the history of the world, has been making new music.  And it’s lovely.  And he’s not alone.

Meet Southbound Honey, a sweet collaboration between C Jak and rising country star Tara Keith.  Originally hailing from Canada, this gal has got a serious set of pipes, and earned a spot on Canadian Idol at age 16.  In 2012, she was selected to play at the Grammys Social Media Rock Star Summit.

I haven’t gotten the full story about how C Jak and Tara teamed up, but what I can tell you is that they are making some pretty sweet music together.  Or maybe the opposite of sweet… I got to preview five of the new tracks today, and you’ll have to just trust me for now that they are crushing, dripping with longing, lonely, jealousy and regret.  With the exception of one, each of the songs centers on some sort of troubled relationship – a strained marriage falling apart around a kitchen counter, a gal discovering her man a’ cheating, a one-night stand that changed both parties – all the elements needed for modern country hits.  And hell, as if I need to say it, Jak and Tara sound really great together.

After 10 years of harmlessly stalking Jak and his music, I have an enormous respect for his deft lyrical skills, and long-time fans will definitely find “Jak” in these songs – some more than others.  Two in particular are stunning and ring with his signature poetic frankness.

So the sad part for ya’ll reading this is that there’s pretty much no details to give, no music to share, no websites to link to, no promo photos to post (well, maybe there’s something if you look here – gotta love Instagram).  They made their debut back in June at the Fort Collins Music Experiment and just recently played the city’s New West Fest, garnering some attention from industry types, but the project is still relatively new. Jak’s pretty mum on stuff, but I know when he pops his head up to tell me about things that they’re getting serious.

So hang tight a little longer, and get ready to get a little stuck on Southbound Honey.  I promise, you’ll be the first to hear more as soon as I do.

New Mighty Oaks Videos

That’s it. I am moving to Germany. To follow a band.

(Seriously, if I could, I would.)

The Cardinal Sessions released two new Mighty Oaks videos today. Just the guys in a field making music.

So pure. So perfect.

I am in love with these songs.
