The amazing Matthew Mayfield just announced a quasi-residency at Charlotte’s Double Door Inn in the month of April – every Thursday for the first three weeks (7th, 14th, 21st). Some of you might remember Matthew from his days in Moses Mayfield, but his solo stuff is seriously soul-blistering music.
Put these dates on your calendar, kids. Not to be missed.
Okay, so something new to you all, not quite for me…but something worth buzzing about, anyway! A couple of years ago, when MySpace was in its heyday and it was THEE place to go to find new music, I stumbled across the profile of a young songwriter living in Nashville, a fella named Brett Ryan Stewart. His deep, smoky voice immediately appealed to me – we all know I like those gruff types.
I downloaded his debut album Necessary Lies and fell in love with it almost immediately, particularly a song called “Don’t You Ever.” Brett and I struck up a conversation, and learned that we grew up about 45 minutes from each other – he’s from Delaware! So I took an even bigger liking to this Yankee-turned-southerner.
Over the past few years, Brett’s been honing his style in Nashville and will release his sophomore effort, Tilt, next week. I’m SO super excited to hear this album…the few previews he’s let out have been utterly amazing, including the first single, “Home,” which you can pick up on iTunes right now. Check out this video which contains the next single, “Wide Awake” and get to know the first soon-to-be-superstar from Delaware. 🙂
Colorado cranks out some amazing musicians … The Fray is probably the biggest name to come out of the Centennial State that most people would be familiar with, but my playlist is chock full of Colorado musicians. The Heyday, Fierce Bad Rabbit, Air Dubai, and really, do I need to profess my love any more for Christopher Jak?
Well, that list also includes singer-songwriter Tim Hanauer, whose last full-length album, Time for Change was a well-worn out record for me in 2009. If you don’t know his work, you may actually have heard it and just not be aware of it: his music has been featured on musical breakout show “One Tree Hill.”
Tim’s got a new EP coming out on February 1st called Wind-Up Toy. As of today, you can preview this dreamy new piece of work over at his website. And, if you sign up for the mailing list, you’ll get a free download of the first single, “This Is.”
One of my favorite things is finding new musicians to love. I’m always hunting down new ways to find new music to listen to… It’s actually a bit of an obsession. My friends know this about me, and as those on the “Krissie Mix” list know, I try to spread the word about some of my new loves. But, the mixes don’t go to everyone and aren’t as immediate. So, I thought I’d start a regular little piece called “Something New” here on the old blog, a way for me to give these artists the attention they deserve and keep me writing!
So, the first of the Something New posts will be about one of my favorite little discoveries in the past few months – a young chap named Caleb Lovely (seriously, how can you not love him with that name) from Pennsylvania. I have just tripped head over heels for the innocence and simplicity in his songs. I absolutely cannot wait to watch him develop! He recently released his first studio-recorded EP, which you can pick up on iTunes.
Here are a few YouTube videos – the first is the video that turned me onto him (and Krissie Mix-ers will recognize it from the Winter Mix), the second is a brand new song/video that he just put up this weekend.
