Earworm of the Week: Micah, “Just a Little Heartbreak”

Man, has this week completely wiped everyone else out or what?  Feels like it’s gone on forever.  Sorry about being a day late with this week’s Earworm, but it’s Friday!

There was a ton of great new music out this week, including Flagship’s debut album, and we know how much I love them. However, I wanted to shine the spotlight on someone new this week.  It came down to two acts, so I went with the song I’ve found myself playing on repeat on the car.

Meet Micah, a singer-songwriter out of upstate New York.  In my world, sometimes there’s just nothing better than a dude in a corner with an acoustic guitar, wearing his heart on his sleeve… And Micah fits that bill perfectly! He released his new EP, Just A Little Heartbreak, this week and the title track is so adorable that I want to go buy him a beer…or give him a hug. It’s just honest as hell and completely catchy. Fridays were made for catchy.

The whole EP is absolutely darling, so be sure to pick it up if you dig what you hear.

(Word has it that Wyclef Jean met Micah in the studio this week and told him he had an early Hootie and the Blowfish vibe… We won’t discuss how many times that first Hootie record got played on repeat my junior year in college, so I suppose the comparison is just!)

And because you should always give credit where credit is due, gotta thank my bud and fellow Rock Boater Elise for turning me onto Micah several months ago (follow her on Twitter).

Happy Friday.  Here’s to a little heartbreak!

Earworm of the Week: Grace Potter, “Big White Gate”

Confession:  An old high school boyfriend had to bribe me to see Grace Potter.  If you know me now, this should make you laugh, because I may be Grace’s biggest fan… so indulge me for a minute while I tell the story.

It was 2007 and I was headed home to New Jersey for what seemed like the umpteenth time that year – and the trip happened to coincide with WXPN’s Xponential Music Festival, where my beloved Will Hoge was playing.  I had recently reconnected with my high school boyfriend Pete over a shared love of music.  He was also heading to XPN and had some passes to get into the autograph signing/artist area. He said, “Hey,  I’ve got these passes, you can go see Will…but you have to stay to see the headliner Grace Potter.”

Now, let me explain.  I am not the biggest fan of female singers.  I wish I could explain why, but I guess I just prefer male voices.  But for Will Hoge, I would endure just about anything, so I agreed to stay.

[Aside #1:  Clearly, now I think that Will and Grace should make little rock n’ roll song babies together… not actual children, you understand, but music… a duet with the two of them could possibly cause me to have a heart attack. I once made a mix CD for someone who didn’t know either of them called “Will & Grace.”  I’m clever.  I know.]

And when Grace and her little band of Nocturnals took the stage, it took one song for me to get it, and probably three songs for me to fall in love. Soul.  Energy.  Sass.  And my God, her freaking voice. She had it all. I refused to acknowledge it to Pete since I’d been so obstinate about it, but a few weeks later when her breakout album This is Somewhere was released, I immediately bought it and became Grace’s biggest advocate.  I told EVERYONE about her.  I’m lucky, I caught on at just the right time, as she and the Nocturnals were on their way up.  I got to see her at small venues with 50 people there [Aside #2: Some of the best concert photos I’ve ever taken have been of Grace.  I suck as a photographer, but these are good.] …now, of course, she sells out 1000+ attendance venues.  I’ve probably said this a million times since that night, but I’ll say it once more.  I have never wanted to be someone else in my whole life, but I would love to trade shoes with Grace for just one day (and damn, her shoes…how does she rock those 5-inch heels on stage for hours?).

Tonight, I will attend my ninth GPN show.  I will sing along.  I will dance.  I will envy her shoes.  And I will love every single minute of it.

[Aside #3:  Rumor has it Grace has been covering Bruce on this tour. You should all know that if she does cover him tonight, I will go completely apeshit.]

So, in honor of the show, this week’s Earworm is the first Grace song that I ever loved, “Big White Gate.”  It’s still my favorite.  I think it’s because it’s about loving music.  I kind of know how that feels.  Watch this video.  Listen to her introduction.

Finally, here’s my long overdue thank you to that old, high school boyfriend:  Thanks, Pete Calabrese.  You gave me the gift of Grace.  You will never know how much that means.

Earworm of the Week: The Temperance Movement, “Only Friend”

This week’s Earworm is courtesy of my music bud, Jess, who clearly gets my music tastes.  Meet The Temperance Movement.

Jess sent me a Tweet several weeks ago with this video link and told me to check The Temperance Movement out.  I completely failed, but luckily, she reminded me early last week.  It took one play of “Only Friend.”  Musical crush born.

Yet another British rock n’ roll band (seriously, America, we are lagging!), The Temperance Movement got together in 2011. These guys look like they walked straight outta 1970, and I LOVE IT.  I won’t lie, what sold me is lead singer Phil Campbell’s bluesy, sandpaper-scruffed vocals.  Um, yes. YES. Throw in some dual guitar jams (Paul Sayer, Luke Potashnick), snappy bass lines (Nick Fyffe), heart-stopping drums (Damon Wilson), and hair (I am from New Jersey, kids) and you have a recipe for me in love.

When a guitar website says this about you, you KNOW you’re doing something right:

“…if rock ‘n’ roll is to be saved, or even needs saving, bands like this will lead the way. Signed by Earache Records just weeks ago, the band will hopefully have their first full length long player by the fall, but in the meantime their first EP, Pride is an ass kicking, mind-boggling slice of pure, unadulterated, and beautiful rock ‘n’ roll.” – Rock Guitar Daily with Tony Conley

The band’s 2012 Pride EP is available in the U.S., but their eponymous album, released this month, is of course, NOT available here yet… but lucky us, we have the internet and can stream it here.

Earworm of the Week: The National, “I Need My Girl”

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again.  Sometimes, I can take awhile to “get” a band.  Case in point, The National.  I bought Boxer.  I bought High Violet.  I listened.  I tried to get it.  I didn’t. When Trouble Will Find Me came out, I thought I’d give it one last shot.

I read a piece today talking about Nirvana’s In Utero and Counting Crows August and Everything After, and the author called “All Apologies” “tangentially sad” and “Anna Begins” “realistically sad.”  I love Counting Crows.  I appreciate Nirvana.  Until now, I appreciated The National.  But I didn’t love them.  However, I’ve fallen pretty hard for Trouble Will Find Me.  And maybe, just maybe, it’s because it’s a little more story-tellerish? I don’t know…but I can’t get enough of it right now.  And after seeing them live last week, I’m sold on them completely.  Hook, line, and sinker.  Six years too late.

My favorite track on the record (right now) is “I Need My Girl.”  It is heart-wrenching and brutal and I love it. And because I’ve played it approximately 500 times this week, it’s this week’s Earworm of the Week.

P.S.  Watch the NPR Tiny Desk Concert with them.  I promise you, it’s worth the 18 minutes you’ll give to it.

Earworm of the Week: Night Riots, “Remedy”

Been a busy week, but I couldn’t leave ya’ll without a new earworm to kick off your weekend.  The lust for guitar-driven rock continues this week…

This week’s Earworm comes from the California-based Night Riots. Stumbled upon them while watching Saints of Valory on AXS TV‘s YouTube channel, and was instantly hooked by their insanely catchy tune “Remedy.”  The Brit-rock influenced vocal tugs at my heart strings, what can I say? Turns out, the lead singer, Travis Hawley, spent some time in the UK growing up… definitely hear that.

If you dig this track, you can get it for free by signing up for their mailing list. However, be sure to grab their EP, Young Lore. It was fan-funded, which speaks volumes to me about the band.  Plus, they’ve got some really great young writing chops – “Masks” is brilliant (“Does holy water leave you pure of heart? Change your ways.” F-me, that’s awesome), “Loyal Blood” is pretty much my new favorite thing right now…

The band was known as PK until earlier this year when they changed their name, so if you really, really dig what you hear…this is a necessity.

Now…what do I need to do to get them to tour on the East Coast?
